Migrating SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 to VMWare 5.5

Initial state: Physical server on old hardware. HDD 80 GB. OS: SCO OpenServer 5.0.7. DBMS: PROGRESS Version 7.3C01. Oblik version unknown.

Goal: migrate the host to VMWare 5.5

Option 1:

Created an image of the powered-off machine using Acronis. Started the image with VMWare Converter 4.1. The OS started. The network card did not work; we could not get it working by transferring the driver through CD-ROM, USB, or another HDD.

Option 2:

Improved Option 1: placed the VMWare network-card driver on the physical host in advance, created a new image, started it on VMWare, and installed the driver through scoadmin software—the network started working. The machine is completely identical to the physical one. Disadvantages: we do not know how to reduce the HDD size; consequently, 85% of the occupied space is unused.

We decided to redo it: install a new SCO on VMWare and transfer the DBMS and Oblik databases to it. This is covered in the next post.
